The name artesian is derived from the French word artesian, describing the flowing wells in the region of Artois, France. These wells, like ours in the Nicolet National Forest, are created when natural pressure from the surrounding cliffs of granite builds below the earth's surface. When this pressure becomes great enough, the water will flow naturally to the surface, creating a true artesian well.
