In 1996 Nicolet Forest Bottling Company Inc. and Johnny Beverage Inc. of Chicago formed a joint venture to produce and
market the world's first caffeinated water.
WATER JOE burst onto the national scene when the New York Times discovered its use as a coffee and cola alternative at the Chicago Board of Trade. With the amount of caffeine equivalent to
1 cup of coffee, Water Joe became the drink of choice at CBOT where all beverages except water are outlawed on the trading floor.
The New York Times article spurred an incredible demand for Water Joe. Consumers of all age groups who did not like the taste of coffee or the effects of cola clamored for Water Joe. Stories on CNN, CNBC, MTV, CBS Evening News created a demand that other regional bottlers could not pass up. Within 5 months of Water Joe's debut, there were 14 "knock-off' brands in the U.S. Today there are
none.
Water Joe in 1997 was highlighted as one of the new product hits of the year by USA
Today. It is without question one of the best and most underdeveloped consumer beverages in the world. Despite its rapid growth in Europe and more recently in the Gulf States, Water Joe as an amazing alternative to coffee and cola, is still not widely known.
